From the ashes Gallery: Paintings on Canvas *NEW* Description: This design, developed from the mapped area of Gulliver, signifies the growth from my experiences of living in this current location. The place is in an urban area and is an old Queenslander we have renovated and made our home and work space. However, I questioned how this design fitted metaphorically with my life’s experiences here. After talking about different characteristics and being told that what doesn’t bend breaks, I thought of the comment that movement in all things leads to evolution and growth. This became a true statement for me in this location and throughout the development and painting of this work. I was almost finished the layering in the painting so it signified the experiences and emotions I wanted to communicate when it turned out to be my rostered turn to play music for St Peter’s Sunday service. As I played the Michael Mangan tune Out of Ashes, I reached the section “From the Ashes new growth is born” and instantly knew I was playing with the experience and emotions that had influenced the development of my painting. It summarised how this work made me feel. Some viewers see figurative shapes, others a wolf howling at the Lamb and moon, another saw a cricketer bowling. For me the work appears as an abstract urban evening landscape with the healing power and thankfulness that the start of new life happens every day. Perhaps it is my sanctum!
