Firmament, Tall trees and Technology Gallery: Paintings on Canvas *NEW* Description: This design is from the area where I grew up and Kerala which also has the duality of life’s experience. The wonderful height and depth of the tall trees in the rain forest and the fresh fields of corn and produce which contrasts to the sadness when family blood is spilt through human error and faulty technology. Thus, this work signifies both an ecological message and personal experience of my Father’s death. The Atherton Tablelands used to be nicknamed the place of “Tall Trees”. Unfortunately, many of the wonderful tall trees of my childhood are gone. The immediate rainforest that we played in on the fringes of Atherton has been removed for agriculture and business development. The development and the machines of technology moved in while the land and its creatures weep for an environment that was. The rich earth under the scrub (as we called it) is now bared to the elements, causing change to the whole atmosphere and ecosystem. It was also technology that caused many families to weep. A faulty instrument in the cockpit of the plane directed the flight path too low. Coupled with lack of vision in the stormy night, the jet crashed into the side of Mt. Elliott as it was coming in to land. There were no survivors as it spewed parts of bodies all over the mountainside. As I was layering the painting for the development of the art work, a faulty section in the woven structure was exposed (another technological fault). I believed this fault was meant to be so incorporated it into the work as a signifying element of technology but also the serendipitous elements encountered in life.
