Meeting Place web Gallery: Paintings on Canvas *NEW* Description: Positioned at the base of the Gulliver map in the collaborative painting, this design is a metaphorical map of a tertiary learning institution. Such places seem to offer an ordered chaos in the learning/teaching process. But as knowledge is gathered it can be misleading. The layered expressions in this painting were influenced by the writings of Thomas Merton. Through his observations, he reminds us that when studying or teaching you do not really know the beings you know. You only know about them. That is to say you create for yourself a knowledge based on your experiences and observations. What you observe is really as much the product of your knowledge as its cause. You take a thing not as it is, but as you want to investigate it. Therefore, my investigation is valid but in a sense artificial. By becoming what I want the design to be from my experiences, it takes a disguise which I have decided to impose upon it. To experience, not only observe, implies a dimension of primordial familiarity. Thus, this painting is my disguise of a meeting place which signifies essence of place through 25 years of my experience of study, teaching and developing friendships.
